Update 9th April 2018.
Sharing some tips on burnishing on soft edge of project.
It is better to have paper as the base when doing burnishing of the soft edge of project. The purpose of the paper is to protect the matt, as due to intense burnishing the matt grid line will wear off  I have glue a small piece of scrap leather on a small holder for this purpose. Instead of using finger to hold and rub against the project edge.

Some tips for luggage tag parts.
Update 12th March 2018.

This part is preparation for making band.
Use a sharp knife to scrap part of the leather surface to create rough surface to apply glue.
On the other end is to remove part of the surface and prepare to apply glue.
Do take note it is the reserve side to remove part of the surface. It serve as dual purpose a) to reduce thickness at folded part and (b) as part of the gule process to clean area.

Use of backing material to punch hole with awl tool
Notice this small band was measure to required length and the end part are glued together after cleaning and scrapping to required thickness. See above procedure
use an awl tool to punch hole number #1 and #2

Insert thread from inner side and exit outside (Number #1)

Loop thread to number #2 hole,

Tie up a knot using thread on inner side. This to terminate thread .Cut off access and terminate it. Normally to terminate this knot is to trim close to surface and use lighter to terminate joint.

Update 16th March 2018.         Some tips for luggage tag parts.

Slowly cut a line when approaching the end and stop. Note use a marker pen to make it easier to guide the knife when cutting a line.

The same goes to the other perpendicular line
and cut until both line meet. This how the corner edge is cut.

Tools required to perform this action.
Note the paper is a template to be use as a guide for the points.

Use of steel ruler as guide and recommend to have sharp knife for this action.
I had tried to sharpen the knife with very fine emery paper. As the edge wear off very fast. Once the knife edge is dull you have difficulty to cut clean hence it best to sharpen the knife.

Use of steel ruler to mark point base on the template guide. An awl tool is use for marking point on leather. Use a marker pen to make it  more visible for cutting process.

Update 19th March 2018

Tips on making hand carry luggage tag strap items.

Sharing some basic template, basic dimension for making strap use on luggage tag

There is no hard and fast rule it depend on individual needs and design on your luggage tag shape, size, and fit for purpose.

Recommend to use a 1 cm width strap as the minimum width size. As this not too small width to handle and for ease to attached to item.

Sharing tips on details for making strap for luggage tag.
In this case the strap is 1 cm (10mm) and the buckle use should match the 1 cm width.
It is recommended use a oblong punch of 1.2cm (12mm) width to accomodate the buckle center pin dimension.
It best to verify position of punch hole by actual measurement to minimize error due to shape and thickness of leather materials.

To ensure consistent place for rivet it best to bend the rounded end of strap and verify the oblong hole are visible when folded are matching (the 'U' shape are even).

Various stitches types, different thread size ,type and punch hole spacing size, button type and colour (VT5 button size).

Update 11th March 2018 and on 9th April 2018 (edit wording).

Sharing some tips for luggage tag project.

Trying a simple design luggage tag base on Pinterest site. Width is about 7 cm .

* Best practice .It best to have both top and bottom part align together first before cutting "drain" line or groove. At time the top and bottom part edge does not align during gluing. This edge need to trim neatly and clean to ensure better groove result.

This is to ensure when performing diamond chisel punch it get better result where the punch hole get better alignment and matching on both side.

Luggage tag, cut a drain line at edge before for stitch

*The above sequence is very important to ensure
a better drain line is cut clean, straight and parallel to edge which will improve on your saddle stitches.

** another tip using diamond chisel punch is apply a small amount of beewax and olive oil to allow ease to remove diamond chesil .

***  If I'm using a 6 prong chisel typically I will overlap 2 prongs with the previous 2 holes. This will keep your holes more in line with one another. Apply a bit of bees wax to both sides of the chisel before punching your stitching holes. You may need to do it every few holes, but it works a treat. You can do it with your hole punches as well to help get them out of sticky leathers.

Typically this issue is accentuated on the back side of your stitching and can typically be helped by making sure your holes are punched all the way though the leather.

****   Confirm the punch holes are in line for top and bottom part of the drain line. Inspect both side of the luggage tag to verify.

It will make work easier to apply small amount of glue to under side on both parts.
Start points for punch hole it easier to select either corner.

Measure, mark and position the punch tool in preparation for stitching.
