In the beginning on doing leather project for the first time. Did not know various type of leather material or their properties can make your project look more presentable and useable for it intent purpose.
What I did for practice in the beginning stage was buy scrap piece of leather to save cost and try experiment on various way to stitch leather and try different method of stitching both manual and using sewing machine.
There was some success when use an old sewing machine and try various thread material for sewing cloth and use default needle size and type but it produce very inconsistent result.
It was frustrating at time and but a good learning process along the way.
Slowly learning the correct way after watching You Tube as my "Sifu" / Master and further experimenting different leather material and accessories and tool was the way forward to learning.
Due to my limited knowledge and skill it fun to learn other thru various self learning method. One day discovered a lady from Taiwan have a very simple way to demonstrate how to make simple leather project which is practical and easy to follow.
There are numerous leather craft web site that we can learn from there. Preference which site to surf depending on what you looking for and which level of skill you are at that point in time.
There is no hard and fast rule just go with the flow on your project. Main thing is to enjoy and have fun as you move forward.

================== Tips of the days 30th June 2017 ================
When doing leather craft hobby from time to time to share best practice and tip to help us do a better project. It looks simple and straight forward but at time it can make a world of difference to end product.
One outcome of doing stitch work is there some "excess" thread due to miscalculation or estimation of the whole project requirement. Hence at time we have longer thread leave behind . We note it can be repurposed to tie them together and use to for other purpose like as a "tie up material" roll of leather.
Another tips is when apply glue to big surface area it at times needs a "third hand" to minimize it run off and minimize stick to fingers.
Hence it will be helpful to use another object to hold the materials from moving or slipping away when apply glue.

Chrome tanned or vegetable tanned leather? What's the difference?

A brief demonstration of the differences between chrome tanned and vegetable tanned leathers.
Here is a response from an expert with explanation - - Mike DeLoach 1 year ago.
This does a good job at explaining the tactile differences, but the explanation of the internals is missing a little bit. The missing word in your explanation is "Collagen". A simplified explanation is that it is a protein 'glue' that holds the fibers/cells together. In veg-tan (VT)leather, the basic collagen is preserved which results in hardenability and shapability of VT leathers. In chrome-tanned (CT) leather, the collagen is effectively replaced [as you described "..it eats it's way in"]. The collagen is what allows VT leather to take a burnish, through heat and pressure (and allows VT leather to take and hold tooling impressions). The leather should be moistened to 'activate' the collagen, then slicked down. Once softened, or activated, the fibers of the leather can be repositioned, formed, and set into place. That's what the slicking does. Burnishing the edge is really nothing more than heat setting, through friction, the slicked edge once all the fibers are laid down. Once the leather dries out, the collagen is then 'set' in that position. The application of any edge dressing, such as wax, does more to seal the edge against additional moisture intrusion than actual burnishing. However, it IS easy to get a high gloss finish on wax, so many of us use a wax blend to finish our edges. There is more information available at Leatherworker.net, or if you REALLY want to get into the fine details of what's going on inside the leather ....Leatherchemists.org. I hope that this is taken as intended, which is only to be informative and explanatory. Thanks for taking the time to make the video.

About two years ago, architects Faiz Rosli and Ayu Lamien started Attached Leather Co with the intention to revive the making of handcrafted leather goods. The couple had stumbled upon the craft in Penang from an old woman selling leather goods at an antique shop.
Ayu was curious so she approached the woman to teach her how to make the leather products and she taught them the basics. This kickstarted their passion for the craft.

This site have some good recommendation on leather selection for general purpose sewing machine use. As most general purpose sewing machine have limitation to handle leather materials and thickness.
My experience when sewing on leather you have to watch out the type and size of needle, type of thread and the footer of the machine.
It is recommend to sew with low speed on sewing machine.
You have to try out to get the feel and how best to handle them.
One thing I experience is that certain leather material and which side the texture and position it can be a real challenge to sew them.
It is not recommend to sew with pattern or zip zap as it might not work well for leather. Certain thread does not work well on leather material of any thickness.
Hence it best try out with scrap leather before you start your project, as it is expensive to make mistake with leather. Also with leather you cannot afford to resow as they can only be sew over once.
Watch the footer impression on soft and delicate surface of leather with sewing machine.
In my searching and experience, I have found “garment” leathers and “upholstery” leathers that are appropriate for my sewing machine. Garment leathers, like lambskin, are going to be very soft, with beautiful drape, but they are also more delicate. Upholstery leathers will have a stiffer hand and are very durable, but they also sometimes come in thickness that are too thick for domestic sewing machines. So you have to be careful to watch the weight/thickness when ordering. My experience when sewing on leather you have to watch out the type and size of needle, type of thread and the footer of the machine.

WATCH THE WEIGHT.
There is a wide variety of thicknesses of leathers and most of what is available is only appropriate for an industrial-strength sewing machine. However, there are still plenty of leather options out there. The key to finding them is to know the leather’s “weight” or thickness.1 oz is about 0.4mm thick
2 oz is about 0.8mm thick
3 oz is about 1.6 mm thick, etc
2 oz is about 0.8mm thick
3 oz is about 1.6 mm thick, etc
The weight or thickness of the leather will be available in the product description. I have a Brother computerized sewing machine, and the thickest leathers I have successfully sewn are 2.6oz leathers. However, I have heard the recommendation “less than 3 ounces” for domestic machines. So yours might be able to handle a little more or a little less. Get your hands on some leather swatches or scraps and try them out!
BUY THE RIGHT AMOUNT.
Unlike fabric which is sold by the linear yard, leather is sold by the hide. Depending on the size of animal, hides will vary in size. Cows are huge, their hides are huge, and consequently their prices are huge. Lambskin hides are significantly smaller. Shops will sometimes sell partial-hides or remnants, which is ideal for smaller projects. The product listings will give the amount of leather in square feet. The Better-Than-Basic Bag only needs a piece of leather 2 feet by 2.5 feet.
ALWAYS TRY TEST A SWATCH BEFORE ORDERING A HIDE.
Buying a hide is a big investment. You wouldn’t want to be stuck with a large amount of leather that your sewing machine hates, or you don’t like the feel. The Better-Than-Basic Bag has one small section that requires sewing through three layers of leather. If your machine can’t handle sewing two layers easily and three layers successfully, don’t get it!

DIY Natural Beeswax Leather Finish
Selecting the proper leather finish is an essential decision you must make. You will get a lot of different opinions but ultimately you will have the final say.
There are many options out there that can over-whelm a beginner leather crafter. Options include natural finishes, acrylic finishes, matte finishes, gloss finishes, ect ect.. the list goes on.
Lately I have been leaning more towards natural finishes, more specifically a natural beeswax leather finish. I like the idea of keeping my leather products free from any chemicals.
Even after deciding on what type of finish you would like to use, you now have so many different brands to choose from. It’s pretty crazy how many options you have out there.
So instead of purchasing my beeswax leather finish, I have decided to make my own. Of course, what kind of person would I be if I didn’t give you step by step instructions.

The process is pretty simple, mix equal parts of beeswax and extra virgin olive oil in a double boiler. If you don’t have a double boiler, a Pyrex measuring cup placed in boiling water will also do the trick.
Typically your beeswax will come in large blocks but there are also some that come in small pellets to make measuring more convenient.
The easiest way to measure your wax, if they come in blocks, is to shave the block down with a knife. Once your wax is more manageable, you can place it in the Pyrex cup while measuring it with a food scale.
You will then pour the olive oil in to that same cup until you have equal weights between the beeswax and olive oil.
Mixing Wax and Oil
You will need melt the wax and oil together as mentioned earlier. If you measured your ingredients in the Pyrex cup, simply place it into a pot of boiling water.
It may take some time for the wax to fully melt but be patient and wait.
Stir the ingredients together thoroughly when you see that the wax has fully liquefied. Leave the mixture on the heat for a couple more minutes to ensure a good combination of ingredients.
Once you are satisfied you can take your beeswax leather finish off the heat. At this point pour your mixture into any container. Just make sure that the container can withstand the heat of your solution.
Step away and let the beeswax cool naturally until it becomes a solid.
That’s it! You are done!

This video will teach you how to discern the various types of leather in order to protect your investment from natural deterioration, humidity, dirt, chemical products, stains, body moisture and other materials with which it might come into contact with.
It is necessary to identify the type of leather in order to choose the appropriate cleaner and/or repair method. A magnifying glass and water are needed for distinguishing most types.
Leather Types
Aniline Leather (Natural Leather)
Semi-Aniline Leather
Pull-Up Leather
Nubuck Leather (Aniline Leather that has been sanded to give it a fine velvety surface)
Suede Leather (Very Similar to Nubuck, Made from lower cut of the split)
Pigmented Leather (Top-coated leather ideal for furniture and automotive seats)
Two-Tone Leather (Same as "pigmented" except more than one color of pigment was used)
Bicast Leather (Completely different finishing type usually done on lesser grades of leather)

In this quick video I'm showing some tips for people who are new to leather to help them with checking the quality of what they've bought. There are also tips on cataloguing your leather and storing it correctly.
It is interesting and general knowledge for beginner.
SORRY and do take note:- this video is being disable by the owner, can only watch from You Tube site.
Feedback from a user - Great tips and video. One thing I like to do to track the information for my leather is to use cardboard tags. (I use the 3" X 6" tags. )That way I can record a lot of information on the tag such as; Weight, Square Feet, Vendor, Date, Price, Grade, and etc

Read an article to compare between machine stitching and manual saddle stitch. After reading this article it give us a real uplift on our project a sense of pride, good feeling, better experience to do our best for each project.
http://zeebeeleather.com/faq/
What's wrong with machine stitching? What's so great about hand-stitching?
The truth is, sewing machines are great. They're fast, efficient, and they can crank out beautiful leather goods in a fraction of the time it takes to hand stitch. So what's the problem? Machine stitching is flawed from a durability standpoint. Let's back up.... Leather is strong. Really strong. The weak point in any leather piece is the stitching. A Lock Stitch is made with a machine, when two needles enter a hole (one from the top and one from the bottom), meet in the middle, hook the thread together, and move back out the same side they came in, onto the next hole. This makes the stitch prone to unraveling if a portion of the thread breaks, which it inevitably will. We've all been there. With natural wear and tear, saddle stitched thread will sometimes break too! The difference is that when a thread does break, it won't come unraveled because both threads pass completely through each hole, and out the opposite side. Think of it as weaving, or doubling up on the stitching. In a pinch, you can melt the loose end of the thread with a lighter, and that'll be the end of it.
Are you a visual person?
Speaking of thread...
What's so great about Polyester Thread?
Polyester thread is very strong, it has very little stretch to it, it's extremely durable, and won't rot like cotton or linen thread. Our thread is exclusively made by Maine Thread Co. in Lewiston, Maine, USA. We're proud that all of our products are held together with their Waxed Poly Cord (their term for thread), and we use every color they have available. Maine Thread Co. recently brought their Meadow Ring Twister back online after a long dormancy, citing "supply and demand" as the reason. Their workforce has grown over the last few years which proves that supporting American companies works!

Learn to make your own leather products with Attached Leather Co! BY LYDIA KOH
Thursday November 5, 2015
About two years ago, architects Faiz Rosli and Ayu Lamien started Attached Leather Co with the intention to revive the making of handcrafted leather goods. The couple had stumbled upon the craft in Penang from an old woman selling leather goods at an antique shop.
Ayu was curious so she approached the woman to teach her how to make the leather products and she taught them the basics. This kickstarted their passion for the craft.

There are best practice and excellent tips and technique recommended here are :-
1) The Right Amount of Thread
First cut a piece of string that will fit your needle. To determine the length of string you need, measure the stitching line of your project and multiply by 3.5. On smaller stitching lines (less than a foot) multiply by 4 to 5.
